Snapshots are copies of your virtual machine’s virtual disk files. The installer copies your snapshots to the VirtualBox installation directory, and they will be mounted automatically when you start a VM. If, for some reason, you find your snapshots are not mounted, you can manually mount them with the VBoxManage internalcommands command by issuing:

VBoxManage internalcommands mountvm mySnapshot

Then you can browse the virtual machine files from the host machine. The VMware-VMCU userspace driver does a bad job of exposing the files from a virtual machine, so VirtualBox’s snapshots provide a much better interface. Note that you may need to select the VM in the Devices tab first. As mentioned in the previous section, you can just click on the snapshots in the Snapshots tab and select Import, and then your snapshot will boot in the new VM. The best of all is that the installer will migrate any file system changes you make while you create or import a VM. Not only that, but it will also copy any changes you make to the new virtual disk image during the import process. See the VirtualBox manual for how.

One of the most overlooked features in VirtualBox Full Version 4 was auto-starting of a virtual machine on system startup. With the release of 7, you can do much the same thing using VBoxManage, as mentioned in the previous section.

VMware’s VirtualBox has a built-in driver which controls mouse pointer and clipboard features of the VMware virtual machine. It is called the VMware Presentation Driver (VDI-P) because it is used for mouse/keyboard presentation of VMs. In Linux and FreeBSD, VDI-P allows the installation of third-party VMware kernel modules for the improved mouse and keyboard support (e.g. for non-VDI usage).

As you can see, VirtualBox is a free product which is made to be lightweight and easy to use. This is the reason why you can choose between the Free, Power User and Expert Edition. In the second part of this series I’ll show you the differences between the three editions and the installation and configuration process of the IDE.

The bad news is, VirtualBox will say it is not working with your Mac’s hardware. The good news is, VirtualBox appears to work. You will see a VirtualBox window open and there is some more good news: You can click the Run button and it will appear that Windows 11 works fine with VirtualBox. But it won’t actually work.

There’s a good reason VirtualBox isn’t doing that: If it did, the operating system won’t work. Or, at least, it will work at an excruciatingly slow pace. It’s because the virtual Windows 11 is actually running on your Mac’s hardware.

Then, follow the instructions from step one to step four to start installing the prerequisites for running a VirtualBox VM. In the next step, follow the instructions to install the binaries from the download location on your local computer. Once installed, add a remote folder in the ‘My Documents’ of your host to the ‘VirtualBox VMs’, so you can access them from the host directly. In the file structure on your local computer, the folder path should look like this: C:\Users\YourUserName\VirtualBox VMs\.

After this, you have to launch VirtualBox and open the ‘New’ panel of the VirtualBox GUI. Click ‘Add Host’ and then browse to the location on your local computer with the ‘Additional Host Files’ folder where you installed the binaries. On the next step, select the new virtual machine from the list. On the ‘Settings’ tab, you can set the name and add more disks. In the ‘Advanced’ tab, you can set network settings such as ‘Host-only adapter’, ‘NAT’ and ‘VirtualBox Host-Only Network’. You can also set the ‘Hardware accelerator’ and ‘Stream de-/encoding’ settings. The following options will allow you to customize the installed guest operating system before running the virtual machine.

What is VirtualBox good for?

What is VirtualBox good for?

You would probably know about virtualization and have used several different products to perform those actions. Many people would like to test all parts of their operating system in virtualization. It will allow them to do so without setting up an expensive cluster of hardware. VirtualBox allows for a quick way to try something out without incurring the hefty costs of a physical machine. VirtualBox seems to be a simple and fast way of doing it. Its got the simple user interface, it’s very light weight, it doesn’t require a lot of CPU or RAM, so it makes it well suited to run the things you need.

VirtualBox is a free virtualization program that will make it possible for you to run a copy of Windows in Linux, FreeBSD, or another operating system as if the windows were native to that operating system. It will allow you to also run Linux applications that will behave as if they were running natively in Windows. You can do all this from within one operating system – Windows, for example, or Linux. VirtualBox allows you to run multiple operating systems in virtual machines, without the need to partition a hard drive. You will have to create a virtual disk for each, which can grow dynamically in size when you create new operating system virtual machines.

Linux users had a difficult time with the old Grub2, as it would never switch from one operating system to the other unless you physically moved the mouse cursor. With the new Grub2, it can now automatically handle situations like this. But in case if you want to have a more formal list of all of your operating systems installed, you can change this setting in VirtualBox in the settings and it will now load GRUB2 automatically. And whenever you boot up into a new operating system, you can then boot straight to it with a single click.
