Bats navigate by echolocation; the sounds they emit echo back to them. Bats navigate by detecting different echoes. To call out to each other, they make a distinct sound by producing a burst of echolocation — a sound so weak that it is barely audible. Every colony is different. Some colonies roost in houses, some roost in mines or other large dark spaces. My favorite bat place is the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden’s Bear Canyon Natural Area, located at 10210 Palmdale Rd. in Palmdale. Here, you can find the colonies of cave and hoary bats.

Bat genomes encode a large number of miRNAs-related genes, suggesting that they may play important roles in bat biology. Gene ontology analysis showed that various biological processes were significantly over-represented in the list of enriched GO terms (Fig. 5a ). Among the top enriched terms, we identified several items such as cell cycle regulation and cell cycle check points in addition to skeletal and cardiovascular development. The cell cycle (M-phase and G1/S-phase transition) plays an essential role in the dynamic regulation of cell growth and proliferation, which is an important contributor to both species and tissue-specific features in mammals 9 .
To look into the ontology of proteins co-immunoprecipitated with the seven candidate mature miRNAs (miR-6665-3p, miR-19125-3p, miR-769-5p, miR-1975, miR-2786-5p, miR-146a-5p, and miR-181a-5p) and those of genes (CLIP-seq) having multiple target sites (miRNA-target gene) for individual miRNA, we performed a Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis using PANTHER 10.0. The results showed that co-immunoprecipitated proteins and genes were significantly enriched in BP categories related to various biological processes (Fig. 5b and Supplementary Fig. 13 ). Among the top enriched terms, we found several terms related to nervous system development such as neuron development, dendrite development and synapse and were also enriched in the BP categories of the development of the cardiovascular system and skeletal system (Fig. 5b ). These results suggest that the miRNAs encoded in the bat genomes may regulate genes related to nervous system and cardiovascular development in bats.

Who Uses The Bat! and Why Is It Important?
The data show that temples are common to bat roosts and that many bat species use them. This underscores the need to conserve these sacred spaces and that bats are not an incidental part of temple complex infrastructure. The most common species were Hipposideros speoris, R. leschenaultii, and T. melanopogon ( Table 1). These species are widely distributed and are mostly medium and large bodied compared with those species associated with forest trees, which are more common in tropical rain forests.
Temples are very unique environments and bat life can be seriously impacted by manmade habitat changes. The conservation of temple complex structures provides the bat with a place to safely raise young and provides protection for their habitat. In general, the conservation of temples represents a positive step in promoting interspecies social co-existence on the island of Sri Lanka. With local tourism growing, there is a need to educate tourists about bats and ensure that personal care is taken in temple complex sites.
The next step is to sample bats in the major cities of the country. The next phase will assess the extent of bat conservation in Sri Lanka, and examine its link to bat conservation programs elsewhere.
To know who, where and when bats are used, we conducted a qualitative and quantitative inquiry among the devotees and the temple staff at the time of bat festival/s in December 2017. The Bat Almanac, a local folklore book for the study area, provided the information on timing, ritual activities, festival dates and temple structures. A total of 11 volunteers were interviewed, and their availability was recorded. For the quantitative aspect, we interviewed 51 devotees who walked circumambulation in the temple at 11 different periods from 10 am to 6 pm. We used focus groups at the end of the temporal series and also used statistics from the total number of bat assemblages, since the temporal series was semi-spaced [ 35 ].
We used a training matrix to understand the quantitative and qualitative data. The matrix was categorized by: 1) Temporal series; 2) Bat preference; 3) Bat use; 4) Temporal series and bat preference; and 5) Temporal series and use of bats. We used a thematic analysis to validate the categorical data from the matrix. We kept the bat use data in the quantitative data, and the use of bats was recorded in the qualitative data.
During our field observations, we identified 51 seasonal time series of bat use from October to May. We interviewed the devotees who circumambulated the temples from 10 am to 6 pm. The data collection was conducted in two distinct time series. The first was conducted during the monthly Bat-Festival, from 10 am to 3 pm. The second was conducted during the monthly Bat-Festival, from 7 am to 10 am on the next day. A total of 19 Bat-Fetivals were observed during this time. The Bat with crack Almanac provided data on the Bat-Fetivals and the festival dates. We also observed if the Bat-Fetivals occurred during raining or non-raining. Periodic Bat-Fetivals during raining season were observed in Thirunelveli, as well as in Thoothukudi. During non-raining season, only two Bat-Fetivals were observed in Thirunelveli, and one Bat-Festival in Thoothukudi.
The Bat! Description
The leviathan (grand canyon) bat is a stout-bodied, dark-colored species that measures about 3 inches in length. Its fur is a rich russet color and its hind feet have three toes (although the toes on its forefeet are only two-toed).
The northern long-eared bat is a medium-sized bat that measures about 4 inches in length, and dark brownish-gray in color. It has a long snout and a narrow, pointed nose. The long-eared bat mostly avoids artificial lights that can confuse and attract insects away from a hunting area.
The yellow-faced bat is a medium-sized bat that measures about 5 inches in length and is olive-brown in color. Its nose is very distinct from the other species, as the tip of its snout is yellow, and its face and ears are bright yellow. The yellow-faced bat is able to detect prey by using its sense of hearing to eavesdrop on insect sounds.
The silver-haired bat is a small-sized bat that measures about 5 inches in length and is also olive-brown in color. Its ears are very thin and pointed and its face and snout are black. Its prominent silver hair is caused by keratin, which is like the human nails.
The Mexican free-tailed bat is a medium-sized bat that measures about 5.5 inches in length, has a soft, furry belly and is gray in color. Its large ears are pointed like a bird, and a ring of dark fur around its eyes is present.
7. All bats are deaf. Some bats have cells known as the inner ear. The bat uses these inner ear cells to determine the orientation of its head or body in the world. These cells are very sensitive and allow the bat to hear the movement of small flying creatures such as insects.
When insects move, so does the bat. Because of their hearing abilities, bats are opportunistic eaters. They often hunt at twilight and listen for insects at night. Bats are also able to distinguish prey by the rate of vibrations.
