I have to respectfully disagree with you. I have spent time studying ways to build complex machinery in SketchUp, and while the program may have some limitations, my limited studies have not found them serious. I would like to see those limitations addressed, but believe they are due to a set of paradigms that is causing me to misunderstand the limits of the program. That said, the software is a fine tool for doing anything one needs done.
As far as tactics are concerned, I agree that a tutorial video could be useful, and I usually spend a fair amount of time setting up my work for the next project. But, that’s not a bad thing. I’ve seen a similar sentiment expressed here by others. I think it’s more helpful to watch someone finish a project than to watch them build it. Most people don’t teach by building… they teach by finishing. So I don’t see a big difference between watching a video and finishing the next project. I finish projects I watch, just as I watch videos.

SketchUp is a great tool for learning about basic design and construction techniques and for doing quick, fun things. But it is not a substitute for learning drafting, computer-aided design, or making lots of mistakes on physical models.

Using SketchUp and bringing your ideas to life in a physical or virtual reality is very exciting. With SketchUp, architects and designers alike can easily create beautiful, detailed 3D models of their projects. Once the 3D model is completed, it can be brought to life with photo-realistic textures, surfaces, and layers. You can also customize nearly everything in the model with the use of parameters and filters. With the exception of photography, SketchUp does it all!

The SketchUp Pro 2007 version is one of the best options for a 3D software solution for them. It is now also a multi-user solution which has a lot of good features. You can share the models with other users and see changes made to them in real-time. It also comes with a powerful history feature which allows you to go back in time and undo previous actions and see the results.

I took that one step further when I created some 3D content and had a client request a flat colour theme, basically a modified version of the original theme, so I was able to provide that just from the 3D content that I had in SketchUp.

The point is you have a full, tried-and-tested editing toolset. If youre looking for a way to get started with SketchUp, this is the way to go. But still, theres plenty of room for improvement.

As a side note I have also checked out the option of having SketchUp available on tablets. I have always been a big fan of tablets for sketching and I think theyre pretty intuitive when it comes to use. But using SketchUp on a tablet, is a totally different story as it seems quite cumbersome. SketchUp Lite is not yet available on tablets as I mentioned previously. Of course, SketchUp and SketchUp Pro 2007 are cross-platform and this may serve you well.

SketchUp used to be limited to 1.0 million polygon plans and the rendering would be limited to 2048×2048 pixels. The new V-Ray rendering engine is also fast. It also uses advanced neural networks to do its ray tracing. The previous version used an older ray tracing method which was significantly slower.
