Its been a while since I’ve made a post about Camera Raw . This time it’s not about a new feature, it’s about a change that I already mentioned months ago on social media, but everyone seem to just gloss over in their excitement about the new features.

I have been using the unsharp mask filter in Camera Raw for many years, and couldnt live without it. The first time I tried it after the change, I was amazed at how much better it worked. If you’ve not had the pleasure of using this feature, it works by filling a mask (layer) with a 100% black or white and then using the Crop tool (or drag on the canvas) to cut out the portion of the image you want to sharpen. You then have to make sure the brush is creating a mask by using the L key to turn the brush black (or white). This changes the opacity of the mask to 100% and creates a transparent layer which acts like a stencil to prevent what you draw in the mask from appearing as a regular layer. Its very simple and if you do it right, it can result in some very nice results, and if used correctly it doesnt make the image look overly sharp.

You’ll see a lot of this in the latest Adobe Lightroom for Apple Macs (4.4), and I’ll be posting an update to this review once I try LR with the latest native update, expected to be in a couple of weeks. But to be honest, given that LR isnt quite the real player that Camera Raw is, I think this blog has barely scratched the surface of what Camera Raw is capable of.
