The normal process of using a RAW file in the Adobe suite is to convert it to JPEG, process it and then convert it back to a RAW file. What we’re getting in this release is the ability to process the RAW file directly and convert it into a JPEG. You can still convert it back into a RAW file later if you want. What’s great about this is that the process is quick and it can be done without sacrificing image quality.

Again this is just one of many small tweaks, there will be more in the future and I hope that the 14.5 release doesnt stop the trickle of improvements.

I cannot speak for other software programs on this topic. I have used all of them that are freely available and have no complaints about their basic raw processing capabilities. My main tools are Lightroom and Camera Raw 13.2. I can work with other programs like ACR (Photoshop) or DaVinci Resolve with great results, but I have a mac so that is all I have used. But if you are not a mac user, and want a full featured Adobe photo editor to do your adjustments and the likes then ACR will work. It is a great tool. Its not perfect, but it is a great tool. I have tried other software and they all were very similar to ACR in capability. Adobe seem to be a forward thinking company, very much in tune with how I work as an artist.

In case you don’t know, much of the pro sales pitch for ACR is that it’s so easy to use.
Which makes it sound extremely easy, or so easy that a novice can do what the pros need to do with it. If that’s true, then why can’t Adobe just make an even easier version of ACR that only does the things that the pros use?

Adobe Camera Raw is not the best editing app. It is close to Adobe Lightroom, as it is built upon that. But it also has it’s pros and cons.
First you are able to quickly adjust a JPEG.
Any adjustments you make are only applied to that instance. So you can keep a number of JPEG instances and get very good previews.
Also a good value on its own, especially if your intent is to just refine or lighten and sharpen someones subject.
Also a few adjustments such as local contrast are also very quick.
The difference between these two programs is huge. The default adjustments to a JPEG will be stored in a tag file.
So if you have Photoshop Elements, you can create a tag, open it up, delete the adjustments you don’t want, save it as a JPEG. And then apply that same adjustment to a similar set of images. You can easily use that adjustment in both programs, but it won’t affect the original. And it takes way less time to create it in one program than in the other.
So it is more of a time saver. But you aren’t editing the original.
That same JPEG image file might be further edited in Lightroom, under the assumption that it was the original and the tag file is just a reference.
As a cons of editing in Camera Raw, it can really add a lot of work when making a family picture, and then want to import the pictures into Lightroom.
Or even just to consider a package of hundreds or maybe thousands of images as a whole, rather than selecting the images in File>Organize, then importing. You are much better off doing that in Lightroom.
If your intent is to edit only one image, then there isn’t much point in shooting jpg. And yet it’s probably very practical to use, since you really only need quick adjustments to one image. You might need to check it out too. 🙂
Finally there are quite a few photo programs that are better for editing, such as FCP or even Photoshop. Still, many people still want to use what they’re familiar with, or don’t want to spend their time learning a new program.
The benefit of going with the Adobe suite is that there is much more to learn. And that costs a little more over time. But they do a great job of making it very easy to learn, and keep improving it.
If you are familiar with Photoshop, you might already have a lot of the basics down, such as layer for editing, selections, masking, etc. But there is still so much more to learn.
With an app like Camera Raw, this can be a frustrating slog. And there is much less learning curve.
So it may not be the best app for you. Or you can read reviews, and decide which one is best for your needs.
You can also pretty much make any adjustments you want in both Lightroom and Camera Raw. The best thing to do is make a series of adjustments in both, and then compare. Just know that Lightroom will auto-update the original, the adjustments it makes. And the originals will be removed as unnecessary. So you may need to make some minor adjustments in Camera Raw after that, but it should be pretty easy.
